Festivals and Events in Birmingham

Birmingham is quickly becoming the go-to festival destination in the Southeast. It's about music. It's about art. It's about film. It's about food. The festival scene around here is about a lot things, and it's about time you experienced it for yourself.

Vaudeville Days

Built in 1914 for B.F. Keith's Vaudeville circuit, the Lyric is one of few theatres still existing today that was specifically designed to maximize the acoustics and close seating needed for vaudeville shows. Major stars such as the Marx Brothers, Mae West, Sophie Tucker, Will Rogers and Milton Berle played the Lyric. Berle said it was “as fine a theatre as any in New York.” During the 1920s, it was the custom to attend shows at the Lyric Theatre on Monday nights—if you could get a reservation. Tickets cost from 25 to 75 cents. In the summertime, air was fanned over two tons of ice a day to keep guests cool. Though seating was segregated, the Lyric was one of the first venues in the South where blacks and whites could watch the same show at the same time for the same price.

Barbecue and Blues are a great combination so start planning for the 9th Annual Bob Sykes Bbq & Blues Festival presented by the City of Bessemer set for Saturday, April 28, 2018. It brings visitors to our city from across the state, southeast and even internationally. We're proud that this festival will continue to be held in Bessemer and we're looking forward to many more great years of barbecue and blues music in downtown Bessemer.” The festival has been chosen for numerous years as one of the top food festivals in Alabama. There is something to do for the entire family including a large kids corner with activities and games. Children twelve and under are free with a ticketed adult. Besides great music and bbq the festival offers a variety of booths including arts and crafts, outdoor exhibits, and a diverse selection of vendors selling tempting offers. World Famous GoGo Brass Funk Band

In the year 2010, a brand new sound was born. The Brass-A-Holics Band and the Go-go Brass Funk genre joined the ranks of the time honored traditions, culture and music that have come out of the great city of New Orleans, Louisiana. The ensemble contains the core New Orleans brass elements – trumpet, trombone, saxophone and sousaphone, but also adds a full drum set, percussion, keyboard, and an electric guitar for a unique sound that is transcending the traditional world of brass band music. A Brass-A-Holics live show is a singular experience. Where else can you hear the influences of Miles Davis, Nirvana, John Coltrane, Wham, Cyndi Lauper, Kanye West, and Louis Armstrong all in one set? Be warned that this sound is a powerful substance, both addictive and intoxicating. It is guaranteed that you will find yourself partying under the influence and addicted to the Brass-A-Holic sound!
