Welcome to Medical West! Our mission is to provide the highest quality health care in a patient-focused environment. Medical West consists of a newly renovated, 310-bed acute care hospital and 13 outpatient health centers serving the communities of West Jefferson County and West Hoover. The hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic, surgical, medical, and emergency services. Hospital services include: a 21-bed Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Women's Center, Telemetry Nursing Unit, Geriatric-Psychiatric Unit, Surgical Services, Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility, and Advanced Wound Center.

In addition to the $15 million main campus renovation, the hospital recently became home to the state's first Freestanding Emergency Department (FED) off Highway 150 in Hoover. The new, 24,342 square foot FED consists of 10 exam rooms, including: two trauma rooms, CT, X-ray, ultrasound, EKG, laboratory and room for expansion.

Primary care physicians, specialists, and sub-specialists have offices located on the main campus in the Professional Office Building. Residents of Bessemer, Hoover, McCalla, Tannehill, Hueytown, and Vance benefit from the convenience of Medical West family practice and internal medicine health centers located in their neighborhoods.

Convenient on-campus parking is available at Medical West in several locations. You can park in the main lot in front of the medical center's professional building and in the 4-story parking deck on Medical Center Drive next to the emergency department.

Medical West ED

The Medical West Emergency Department is a 17-bed, Level 3 Trauma Center. This department, located on the ground floor of the hospital, is designed to provide care for pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient emergencies. The Medical West ED also operates a four bed overflow unit, which care for our less acute care patients.

The ED Care Team

Our physicians and nurses are specially trained for the Emergency Department environment. There are many other specialists involved in caring for our patients, including pharmacists, lab technicians, patient care technicians, unit clerks, and x-ray technicians. Our nurse to patient ratio is typically 4:1 depending on the area of assignment. We have the ability to provide one on one care when acuity rises. Physicians provide care in the Emergency Department 24 hours a day.

The patient's family members are a vital part of the care team. Their role is to provide emotional support; however, they may also be involved in decision making concerning the patient's treatment or in some cases, they may be asked to act as a spokesperson on behalf of the patient.

Parking

We offer free parking immediately in front of the Emergency Department; however, parking is limited and we ask that if you have multiple family members present that they use the parking deck immediately behind the Emergency Department.

Visiting Information

The Emergency Department is a very busy and hectic environment at times. It is in the best interest of our patients' care to limit visitors to one or two at a time. Please check with the security guard at the desk for a visitor's pass. The staff will try to accommodate each patient's family needs; however, please keep in mind that the patient's care comes first and we need your assistance in helping ensure that your family member receives the best, uninterrupted care we can provide.

Cell Phone Use

We ask that you refrain from using your cell phones in patient care areas as a courtesy to all patients receiving treatment in the Emergency Department. Please place them on vibrate mode or silent mode. We will gladly assist you with the use of one of the Emergency Department phones.

Triage System

Triage is the process we use to prioritize patients based on the severity of their condition. Upon arrival in the Emergency Department through our main entrance you will be greeted by a staff member and assessed by a Registered Nurse. You will be assigned an acuity level and seen based on your chief complaint and the assessment of the nurse. At Medical West, we utilize the Emergency Severity Index (ESI), which is recommended by the Emergency Nurse's Association (ENA). ESI is a five tier triage system that allows for more detailed assessment of each patient's chief complaint and resource needs.The ESI system helps emergency department staff rapidly identify patients in need of immediate attention and better identify patients who could safely and more efficiently be seen in the overflow unit rather than the main ED.

Acuity Levels:

LEVEL 1: Emergent (Life and limb threatening - Requires immediate care).

LEVEL 2: Emergent (Unstable, but not life or limb threatening).

LEVEL 3: Urgent (Potentially unstable - requires two or more resources*).

LEVEL 4: Less Urgent (Minor illness or injury - requires one resource*).

LEVEL 5: Non-Urgent (Minor illness or injury - requiruing no resources*).

* resources indicates any test, treatment or procedure that may need to be administered (ie, lab tests, xray, exams, etc)

All of our patients are important to us and depending on the time of day and the overall acuity level of the Emergency Department, there may be delays.

Food/ Drinks

Due to possible tests, procedures and infection control, we do not allow food or drinks in the patient care areas. We will gladly provide the necessary diet a patient may require during their stay in the Emergency Department.

Checking on a Patient by Phone

Due to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Privacy Laws, the hospital may not release patient information to the public. However, your Emergency Department nurse will provide a special code word for one family member to use in order to gain information regarding your loved one's status.

Pediatrics West

Welcome to Pediatrics West

Pediatrics West was originally part of the Pediatrics Department at Lloyd Noland Hospital and then HealthSouth Metro West. When the decision was made in 2001 for that hospital to no longer employ physicians, the practice was purchased by Children's of Alabama. Today Pediatrics West operates two offices in Bessemer serving patients ranging from newborns to 18 years. We recognize the ongoing development in this community, and we look forward to continuing to expand our practice to serve the growing number of children in this area.

Children's of Alabama wants to give uninsured and underinsured patients discounted care that is medically necessary. An individual will not be charged more than amounts generally billed for emergency or other medically necessary care.

Eligible Patients – Patients who do not have insurance are automatically provided with a discount. This discount is shown on the billing statement you will receive from the Business Office. Additional discounts are available to those who apply and meet the eligibility requirements.

Eligible Services – Emergency and medically necessary healthcare services (inpatient and outpatient) provided by Children's of Alabama personnel at all locations including the Benjamin Russell campus, Children's South, Children's on 3rd, and Park Place. Sub-Specialty Physicians and Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Radiologists, and Psychiatrists are not employed by Children's of Alabama and are not covered by this policy – see policy for detailed list. This policy does not cover cosmetic, elective, experimental (including biologicals) non-urgent medical treatments or medical supplies/equipment. This policy is not intended to cover services not typically covered by most major health plans. (Additional Discounts may also be available for those who receive care in a Children's Primary Care location.)

How to Apply – financial assistance applications may be obtained/completed/submitted as follows:

Determination of Financial Assistance Eligibility – Additional discounts for patients without insurance is based on family income and family size as proven through the application and supporting documentation, based on the Federal Poverty Guidelines (published by the federal government annually) as set forth below:

0 – 200% of FPL 100% discount – Free care
201% – 300% of FPL 50% discount
> 300% of FPL No additional discount


Patients determined eligible for additional discounts will be notified and collection efforts will stop after notification.

When no payment is received for an account and the patient does not qualify for additional discounts, the account will be turned over to a collection agency. The collection agency may contact the patient/family for payment and may report the family to the credit bureaus. Extraordinary collection actions such as liens, lawsuits or garnishments are not used by Children's of Alabama for the non-payment of accounts.
